I am using this time in my life to share my knowledge and experiences to help others find balance. It has been proven that when our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual bodies are in balance we are our most healthy selves and we are resilient to toxic environments.
Physical
The human body is a miraculous machine! The systems involved in homeostasis, which is the balance that the body needs to function, are both incredibly resilient and incredibly delicate. An example of this is core body temperature which needs to be maintained around 37 degrees celsius for everything in the body to work at its optimum. If you’re temperature is raised by just 1 or 2 degrees because of infection you feel unwell and fevers are associated with hallucinations/a detatchment from reality. Our physical body is therefore very delicate but has the incredible power to regulate and heal itself with the right ingredients and environment. What we put into our bodies, what we expose ourselves to and how we use our bodies is really important in maintaining health and keeping us feeling well. Our bodies all have the same incredible design and systems that maintain homeostasis but we all have a unique DNA, genetics and microbiomes which we need to learn about and honour to give ourselves the best opportunity of health, happiness and longevity.

Mental
Our thoughts and analytical mind are wholly connected to our hormones that influence how we feel which in turn impacts how we think. We so often beat ourselves up mentally which will make us feel more stressed and worried. The left side of the brain, responsible for analytical thought and verbalisation, can be more dominant (mine is often loud and bossy). Our society encourages development of this analytical and self critical side to our thinking and often neglects the more feeling and intuitive side. I’m not saying that we need to learn to silence our left brain but we respect the abilities it gives us to analyse and verbalise our experiences and not let it dictate our experiences in a loud, bossy and negative way. By understanding the individual mechanics and impact of our internal dialogues we can problem solve and achieve incredible things in everyday life, keeping ourselves happy and healthy.

Emotional
Our feelings are a rapid way of keeping us safe, we don’t consciously think that something is hot, we feel that it is hot and move before we get burnt. I’ve found it incredibly difficult to name my emotions over the years because our society and particulary mine, and older generations, don’t talk about their feelings. It is still in many cultures and situations seen as weakness to express emotions but it is incredibly important for our whole body health to learn to recognise and express our emotions. How are you feeling right now? Where are you feeling it? If we can’t recognise and express our emotions in the moment or over a period of time then we become traumatised and we don’t learn to regulate our emotions and this is expressed in our bodies and behaviours in all kinds of weird and wonderful ways. If we become numb from blocking out negative emotions it’s difficult to feel joy and happiness and contentment, so we need to learn to embrace the rollercoaster ride of emotions that we experience through our lives to feel whole and fullfilled and stay healthy. Our emotions feelings and intuition tell us what we need in the moment to keep us balanced and feeling safe.

Social
Even the most introverted introverts need social interaction to stay healthy. We are social beings born into families and communities. We need to feel useful and appreciated, we need a role and identities to feel a sense of self. This is not at the detriment of our own needs, wishes and dreams because what is truly good for us as individuals also serves our communities and society. Despite everything that is going on in the world that weighs heavily on us we can create positive change in our society through loving ourselves and responding with love for humanity and our planet.

Spiritual
What if the Hokey Cokey really is what its all about? There are limits to our logical and material knowing. Not everything in this world can be seen to be believed or worked out with logic. What is the point of life? What makes us who we are? What is our purpose? Where do you go for guidance when there is no apparent answer? When you experience existential crisis, who are you going to call? The 12 step programme used in Alcoholics Anonymous refers to a need to believe in something bigger than yourself and this is a fantastic way to describe spirituality. Believing in something bigger than ourselves gives us an inner strength. How do you know the difference between right and wrong? How do you know what is for your highest good? I believe you go within and you feel it. You use your intuition. You use the right side of your brain to connect with blissful energy all around you to strengthen your body and mind. You are more than skin and bones you are a spiritual being.

Environmental
I think it is important to consider a person’s environment in our world today because we have become so far removed from nature, where we naturally thrive. For us to be healthy and happy we need to consider what we are exposing ourselves to and being exposed to in our everyday lives. Plants don’t do well next to wifi routers so logically neither do we. We need to think about what is in our food and water, in our buildings and in the air we breathe. Our bodies and minds are deeply affected by toxins and changes in our environments. We can’t rely on our governments or other institutions and businesses to maintain an environment for our optimal health and wellbeing, so we need to make responsible and informed choices for ourselves.
